IN PRAISE OF SHADOWS

Creative Coding | Web Design

In Praise of Shadows is a desktop-friendly creative coding project inspired by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki's essay of the same name. This work explores the intersection of typography and interaction, using light, motion, and contrast to echo Tanizaki’s meditations on shadow and subtlety. The project features a typographic dialogue between the contemporary sans-serif Buljirya and the classical serif Cardo, inviting users to engage with text in a space shaped by quiet tension and visual play.

At the heart of In Praise of Shadows is a typographic conversation between Buljirya and Cardo. Buljirya’s clean, geometric sans-serif structure contrasts with Cardo’s more traditional, serifed form — yet together, they create a balanced tension that reflects the project’s theme of duality. Through interactive motion and spatial layering, the two typefaces respond to one another, revealing how contrast can also create harmony.
